If you are reading this article, chances are that you are a fan of cannabis, but have you heard of this new THC cannabis product sweeping the nation? Delta 8 is one of the latest and greatest discoveries to come out of cannabis research and might have a serious future in the medical field.
What is Delta 8?
The National Cancer Institute Defines Delta 8 as:
An analog of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) with antiemetic, anxiolytic, appetite-stimulating, analgesic, and neuroprotective properties. Delta-8-tetrahydrocannabinol (delta-8-THC) binds to the cannabinoid G-protein coupled receptor CB1, located in the central nervous system; CB1 receptor activation inhibits adenyl cyclase, increases mitogen-activated protein kinase activities, modulates several potassium channel conductances and inhibits N- and P/Q-type Ca2+ channels. This agent exhibits a lower psychotropic potency than delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (delta-9-THC), the primary form of THC found in cannabis.
And for those of you without a master's in chemistry, I’m gonna explain it in layman's terms! The technical name for THC (you know, the thing that intoxicates you when you consume cannabis) is Delta 9 Tetrahydrocannabinol. While Delta 8 THC may share the "THC," it is a
completely different chemical that creates an entirely unique profile that has puzzled the hemp industry over the past few years. Though Delta 8 is less abundantly found in cannabis plants compared to delta 9 THC, selective breeding and molecular isolation are some methods used to extract this unique concentrate.
What are the effects of Delta 8?
We have to warn you, Delta 8 is by no means CBD. Its effects are familiar to Delta 9 but without headiness and a milder sensation that is completely different from Delta 9. When you consume CBD with THC content under .3%, you do get a unique feeling that only CBD has to offer. The same can be said about Delta 8 but it's effects are completely different than CBD. Although every person is different, we can say that most people have an uplifting feeling with a relaxing body sensation. Always assess your personal ability to handle Delta 8 THC before consuming large quantities.
What are the benefits of Delta 8?
Unfortunately, we are not at liberty to discuss the uses that have been found for Delta 8 but we encourage you to do the research as even the National Cancer Institute Drug Dictionary recognizes that delta-8-THC has multiple promising effects. We also recommend you read Trulieve’s great piece on the benefits of using Delta 8.
Lester Black, from The Stranger has even suggested that Delta 8 helped him with those nasty hangovers! You can read all about that here!
